From solar power to organic gardens and zero single-use plastics, discover how Rushaga Gorilla Haven Lodge is committed to sustainable tourism.
At Rushaga Gorilla Haven Lodge, we believe that luxury and sustainability aren't mutually exclusive. Operating at the doorstep of one of the world's most important biodiversity hotspots comes with a profound responsibility. Here's how we're working to protect the environment that makes our lodge special.
Solar Energy
Our lodge runs primarily on solar energy, with battery storage systems providing power throughout the day and night. This eliminates the need for diesel generators that would pollute the air and disturb the forest's wildlife. Hot water for showers and the kitchen is heated by solar thermal systems.
Organic Gardens
Our kitchen garden supplies a significant portion of the fresh vegetables, herbs, and fruits used in our restaurant. Everything is grown organically, without pesticides or chemical fertilisers that could leach into the forest ecosystem. Guests are welcome to tour the garden and even pick herbs for their meals.
Zero Single-Use Plastics
We've eliminated single-use plastics from our operations entirely. Water is served in reusable glass bottles, toiletries are provided in refillable dispensers, and our takeaway lunch boxes for trekking days are made from biodegradable materials.
Community Employment
Over 70% of our staff come from communities within a 10-kilometre radius of the lodge. We provide training, fair wages, and career development opportunities. When local people benefit from tourism, they become passionate advocates for conservation.
Reforestation Programme
We've partnered with local communities to plant indigenous trees on degraded land adjacent to Bwindi. This creates wildlife corridors, sequesters carbon, and provides sustainable timber and fruit for local families.
What Guests Can Do
We encourage guests to carry reusable water bottles, follow trekking guidelines to minimise disturbance, and consider offsetting the carbon from their flights. Every small action contributes to the bigger picture.
