With eight habituated gorilla families and the exclusive Gorilla Habituation Experience, Rushaga sector offers the highest chances of an unforgettable gorilla encounter in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
Rushaga sector, located in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, has quietly become the premier destination for mountain gorilla trekking in Uganda. Here's why seasoned travellers and first-time visitors alike are choosing Rushaga over other sectors.
Eight Habituated Gorilla Families
Rushaga is home to the highest concentration of habituated gorilla groups in Bwindi. With eight families available for trekking — including Nshongi, Mishaya, Kahungye, Busingye, Bweza, Mucunguzi, Bikingi, and Rwigi — your chances of securing a permit are significantly better than in more crowded sectors.
The Exclusive Gorilla Habituation Experience
Rushaga is one of only two sectors in all of Uganda where the Gorilla Habituation Experience (GHE) is offered. Unlike standard trekking, which allows one hour with the gorillas, the GHE gives you four hours with a family that is still being habituated. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity limited to just four visitors per day.
A 98% Sighting Success Rate
Thanks to the dense concentration of gorilla families and expert UWA trackers who monitor the gorillas daily, the sighting success rate in Rushaga is an impressive 98%. The terrain, while challenging, is generally considered more moderate than the northern sectors of Bwindi.
Beyond Gorillas
Rushaga isn't just about gorillas. The sector offers incredible biodiversity, including over 350 bird species, the Batwa Cultural Experience, community village walks, and some of the most beautiful forest trails in East Africa.
Whether you're planning your first gorilla trek or returning for a deeper experience, Rushaga sector should be at the top of your list.
